The Gustavus men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are set to compete in the Minnesota Challenge this weekend at the University of Minnesota.
The Gustvaus men's and women's swimming teams competed at Saint John's University Friday, the men taking the lead over the Johnnies and the women leading over the College of Saint Benedict.

The men and women are set for a dual meet tonight, the men competing against Saint John's University and the women against the College of Saint Benedict. Events are set to begin at 6 p.m. tonight at Warner Palaestra Pool in Collegeville, Minn. On Saturday, both squads will compete in the SJU/CSB Diving Invitational, events beginning at 10 a.m.
The Gustavus men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams both received recognition from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association (CSCAA) as Scholar All-America Teams. The awards are in recognition of teams that achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the 2016 Fall Semester. The Gustie men achieved a 3.22 team GPA during the Fall Semester, while the women posted a 3.15 GPA – both marks that rank third among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams.

Sophomore Tanner Sonnek continued his outstanding season with his third-straight MIAC Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete-of-the-Week award. Sonnek's latest heroics included four first-place finishes in a 189-109 dual meet win at Carleton Friday. His season-best time of 2:06.05 not only gave him a win in the 200-yard breaststroke, but it also broke a Thorpe Pool record. Sonnek added individual wins in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.77) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.15) and contributed to a win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:39.26).
