SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams both defeated Carleton in a MIAC dual meet Friday evening at Vic Gustafson Pool. The Gustie men beat the Knights 176-115 and the Gustie women won 192-108.

“It was a great meet and we’ve been training hard. It’s been over a month since we’ve had a chance to race and it was good to get back into it,” Head Coach Jon Carlson said. “I think the team really responded well despite the hard training that we’ve been going through. We did see some pretty good performances on both the men’s and women’s side, especially our divers.”

The women started the meet with the 200 medley relay team of Marit Isaacson (So., Saint Paul), Lindsay Sundby (Fy., Cannon Falls), Ellen Hofstede (Sr., Saint Paul), and Hannah Ewer (Jr., Hermantown) winning in 1:52.25. Lucy Peterson (Jr., Saint Paul) followed with a win in the 200 free at 2:02.63 and later won the 50 free in 25.03. Isaacson then won the 100 backstroke in 1:01.58 and later won the 500 free in 5:18.27. Isaacson also won the 200 IM in 2:15.69. Mariel Castillo (Jr., Clive, Iowa) took first in the 200 butterfly in 2:20.89. In the one-meter dive, Kaija Pratt (Jr., Minnetonka) totaled 232.25 for first place and also took first in the three-meter at 220.50. Hofstede ensued with a win in the 100 free at 53.72 and later won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.10. The 200 free relay team of Hofstede, Abby Yartz (Sr., Bemidji), Ewer, and Peterson wrapped up the meet with a winning time of 1:40.00.

The men also started the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay with the team of Peyton Richardson (Jr., Crystal Lake, Ill.), Taylor Vander Jeugdt (Sr., Gurnee, Ill.), Dane Hudson (Sr., Eden Prairie), and Kieran Ripken (Jr., Blaine) touching the wall in 1:37.21. Callen Zemek (Sr., Victoria) then won the 1000 free in 10:02.08 and later won the 500 free in 4:51.18. Matt Strom (Jr., Rochester) followed with a win in the 200 free at 1:48.04. Nyden Hill (So., Conway, Ark.) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.18. Ripken finished first in the 50 free at 21.58. In the one-meter dive, Andrew Jensen (Jr., Wyoming) won with a score of 236.10 and also won the three-meter at 215.50. Andrew Becker (Sr., Northfield) then won the 100 free in 48.17. The meet concluded with a win in the 200 free relay by Becker, Ripken, Jack Christoferson (Fy., Sauk Rapids), and Hudson in 1:26.52.

The Gusties also celebrated Senior Day on their last home meet of the season.

“I’m very proud of the senior leadership and group that we have,” Carlson said. “I appreciate every day that I have left with them this season and tonight was a great celebration of their dedication and commitment to this program. Their impact will be felt for years to come.”

The Gusties travel to UW-Stevens Point next Friday and Saturday for the Point Invite.
