Women’s Hockey Tops UW-River Falls 4-2, Advances To NCAA Semifinals

“Testing the waters” may have best described the first period of play in Saturday’s NCAA Division III Women’s Hockey first round game in St. Peter, Minn. between Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Neither team generated many scoring opportunities until the Falcons tallied the go-ahead goal with just :24 left in the frame. The Gusties came out with a renewed sense of urgency in the second, though, and scored three unanswered goals on their way to a 4-2 victory, while punching a ticket to the NCAA semifinals for the third-straight season.

After defeating Concordia College 4-2 last Saturday afternoon for the MIAC Playoff Championship, the Gustavus women’s hockey team is set to host a familiar foe on the national stage – the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. The Gusties and Falcons will face off in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament at Don Roberts Ice Rink on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Amrik Donkena Named MIAC Men’s Tennis Athlete Of The Week

The Gustavus men’s tennis team performed at a dominant level last Saturday with clean sweeps over Elmhurst, 9-0, and Grinnell, 9-0, at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minn. At the forefront of that dominance was junior Amrik Donkena (Rochester, Minn.), winning at the No. 1 singles and doubles spots against each team. For his outstanding play, Donkena has been named MIAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.

Mollie Carroll Named MIAC Women’s Hockey Athlete Of The Week For Second Time This Season

Gustavus women’s hockey senior Mollie Carroll (Eagan, Minn.) has been named MIAC Women’s Hockey Athlete of the Week for the leading the Gustie offense in a 4-2 victory over Concordia in the league’s playoff title game Saturday in St. Peter, Minn. Carroll bookends the conference’s Athlete of the Week honor as she garnered the award after the first week of the season.

The Gustavus men’s tennis team followed it seventh place finish at the 2012 ITA National Indoor Championship with a 9-0 shutout over Elmhurst College on Saturday morning in St. Peter, Minn. The Gusties improve to 7-4 overall, while the Bluejays fall to 2-2 on the year.

The Gustavus women's hockey team is set to take on Concordia College in the MIAC Playoff Championship Game on Saturday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. The puck is set to drop at 2:00 p.m. at Don Roberts Ice Rink. The Gusties enter the title game with a 22-2-2 overall record after defeating Bethel 1-0 in overtime Thursday night in semifinal action. The Cobbers defeated St. Thomas 4-1 in the semifinals and boast a 15-4-5 overall mark.

Allie Schwab Named MIAC Women’s Hockey Player Of The Year, Three Other Gusties Awarded All-Conference

The accolades keep rolling in for the Gustavus women’s hockey team as four Gusties garnered MIAC All-Conference honors. Highlighting the conference’s post-season awards is senior forward Allie Schwab (Stillwater, Minn.) who was named MIAC Player-of-the-Year. Senior Mollie Carroll (Eagan, Minn.), sophomore Amanda Cartony (Stillwater, Minn.) and junior Lindsey Hjelm (North Oaks, Minn.) were also named All-Conference.
