Amrik Donkena - MIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

The Gustavus men’s tennis team performed at a dominant level last Saturday with clean sweeps over Elmhurst, 9-0, and Grinnell, 9-0, at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minn. At the forefront of that dominance was junior Amrik Donkena (Rochester, Minn.), winning at the No. 1 singles and doubles spots against each team. For his outstanding play, Donkena has been named MIAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.

Donkena started the day with a straight set victory at No. 1 singles over Elmhurst’s Alex Harbert 6-3, 6-1. At the No. 1 doubles spot, Donkena paired with Mya Smith-Dennis for an 8-6 win over Harbert and Will Jung.

To cap off the day, Donkena collected another straight set victory at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2 over Grinnell’s Elliott Czarnecki. Donkena and Smith-Dennis teamed up once again at the top doubles position for an 8-1 win over Czarnecki and Mike Cole.

A Rochester Mayo product, Donkena has posted a 5-2 overall record at No. 1 singles and a 7-1 overall mark at the top doubles spot, including seven consecutive wins with Smith-Dennis.

The Gustie men return to the courts this Saturday with home matches against UW-Eau Claire (9:00 a.m.) and Augustana College (6:00 p.m.) at the Swanson Tennis Center.
