Men’s Track & Field Competes At Carleton Relays, Owens Breaks Gustavus Pole Vault Record

Josh Owens set a new school record after clearing 16-0.75 in the pole vault.

Northfield, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s track and field team competed against a slew of Division I, II, and III competition at the Carleton Relays held on Saturday, April 21.  Josh Owens, Blair Reigel, and Steve Groskreutz paced the Gusties with wins in their respective events.  There were no team scores kept at the meet.

Josh Owens highlighted the day for the Gusties with a record-breaking performance in the pole vault.  Owens cleared a season-best 16-0.75, taking the gold medal and breaking Gustavus’ school record that stood since 2003.  His mark today in Northfield bests Josh Gysbers 2003 school record of 15-9.

Blair Riegel took home a gold and a silver at the meet.  Riegel won the long jump after recording a leap of 22-3.5, while also placing second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.96.

Steve Groskreutz rounded out the group with a first place finish in the 400-meter hurdles.  Groskreutz crossed the finish line in 54.74 to win the race.

In the sprints, Matt Dvorak recorded a second place finish in the 100-meter dash, going 11.490 in the race.

Eric Jorgenson and Tanner Davenport finished back-to-back in the 800-meter run.  Jorgenson crossed the line in 1:54.42 and Davenport crossed behind him in 1:56.21.  Also in the mid-distance, Anders Bowman finished fourth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:05.15.

Rounding out Gustavus’ top finishers was Ryan Ness with a second place finish in the javelin after recording a throw of 159-1.

The Gustavus track and field teams will be back in action next weekend.  Select members of the squad will be taking part in the Drake Relays held in Des Moines, Iowa on April 26-28, while the Gusties will host the Drake Alternative on Saturday, April 18 in St. Peter, Minn.
