Three Gustavus Adolphus senior student-athletes have earned a spot on the CoSIDA Capital One At-Large Academic All-District Region Five First Team. Tennis player Sam Frank (Mahtomedi, Minn.), golfer Katie Schenfeld (Indianola, Iowa), and hockey player Sara Yungner (Maple Grove, Minn.) take home Academic All-District honors. First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Sam Frank, head coach Jon Carlson’s #1 singles player, finished the season with a record of 23-10 in singles play and 26-9 in doubles. She is a three-time All-MIAC performer in singles and a four-timer in doubles with a 3.72 GPA in Biology.
Katie Schenfeld is a Management and Health Fitness double major with a 3.78 GPA. Schenfeld won the MIAC Title for second straight season this fall, earning All-MIAC honors for the fourth time in her career. She finished tied for third at the 2011 NCAA Championships.
Sara Yungner, winner of the 2011 Elite 88 Award for women’s ice hockey, boasts a 3.96 GPA in Biology. Yunger has been a staple blueliner for the Gustavus women’s hockey team the past four seasons, playing in all 30 games this year and recording a team-high plus/minus of +20.
The 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-District Women’s At-Large Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performance on the floor and in the classroom.
The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The University Division team includes NCAA Division I participants, while the College Division team combines NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
