NCAA Cancels Winter and Spring Championships Posted on March 12th, 2020 by

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The NCAA released the following statement on Thursday afternoon: Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.

The immediate impact on Gustavus student-athletes includes individuals who qualified for the Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, which was scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C., as well as the Swimming & Diving Championships, originally scheduled for March 18-21 in Greensboro, N.C.

The NCAA’s decision also impacts postseason play for Gustavus baseball, softball, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s tennis.

* The NCGA, the governing body for Division III gymnastics, also cancelled its national championship, which was scheduled for March 28 in Ithica, N.Y.

At this moment, the regular season for Gustavus spring sports will go on as scheduled.
