Gustavus Volleyball Drops 3-2 Heartbreaker To St. Olaf

The Gustavus volleyball lost its first match to a Division III opponent in a 3-2 (20-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-20, 10-15) decision against St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. on Wednesday night. Kim Smisek of St. Olaf led all hitters with 20 kills followed closely by teammate Jessica Levin at 19 kills. The Gustie hitters struggled against the St. Olaf defense as the Oles recorded 80 digs and outblocked Gustavus 13.0 to 8.0.

Women’s Tennis Blanks St. Olaf 9-0, Claims Sole Possession Of 17th Consecutive MIAC Title

The Gustavus women's tennis team defeated St. Olaf 9-0 in Northfield on Monday as the Gusties claimed sole possession of its 17th consecutive MIAC title and the top seed in the MIAC Post-Season Championships. With the victory, Gustavus extended its conference regular season dual match winning streak to 176 matches dating back to 1990. The Gusties improved to 20-8 overall and 10-0 in the MIAC, while St. Olaf dropped to 6-5 overall and 5-4 in league play.

Softball Gets Back On Winning Track With 9-4, 7-3 Wins At St. Olaf

The Gustavus softball team snapped a three-game losing streak with 9-4 and 7-3 wins against St. Olaf in Northfield on Wednesday. Julie Mahre led the Gustie offense as she went 7-for-8 from the plate with three extra-base hits and four RBI, while Erin Truebenbach and Callie Nelsen earned the victories. The Gustavus women's basketball team staged a 18-4 run to rally from an eight-point deficit late in the second half for a 71-66 win against St. Olaf on Saturday afternoon in Northfield. The Gusties forced the Oles to commit 24 turnovers compared to 13 turnovers of their own. Gustavus remained in third place in the conference with the win as it moved to 16-7 overall and 15-5 in the MIAC. St. Olaf slipped to 7-16 overall and 6-14 in the league.

The Gustavus women's basketball team will face St. Olaf on Saturday afternoon in Northfield, Minn. as the Gusties look to stay in third-place in the MIAC standings. The Gusties enter the game at 15-7 overall and 14-5 in the league, while St. Olaf comes in at 7-15 overall and 6-13 in conference play. Senior Jess Vadnais set a new all-time women's basketball scoring record at Gustavus, but it was the Gustie defense that stole the show Saturday in a 58-50 victory over St. Olaf. Gustavus forced the Oles to commit 29 turnovers in a contest as the Gusties needed all of their 16 steals to offset 34% shooting from the field. The Gusties improved to 7-6 overall and 6-4 in conference play, as the Oles fell to 3-10 overall and 2-8 in the MIAC.

The Gustavus men's basketball team improved to 11-3 overall and 7-2 in the MIAC with a convincing 66-52 win over St. Olaf at Gus Young Court in St. Peter, Minn. on Saturday afternoon. The Gusties shot 51.1 percent from the field (24-47), 50.0 percent from three-point range (7-14), and 78.6 percent from the free throw line (11-14) in winning for the 10 time in their last 11 games.

The Gustavus women's hockey team extended its current winning streak to 10 games with a 6-0 win over St. Olaf on Friday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter. The Golden Gusties also extended their power play goal scoring streak to 11 games with two power play goals, breaking the previous record of 10 games set in 2005-06 season. In a non-conference game against a MIAC opponent, Gustavus improved its overall record to 10-1, as St. Olaf fell to 4-7-0.

The Gustavus men's hockey team exploded for four goals in the second period on its way to a convincing 6-1 win over St. Olaf in Northfield on Saturday night. The win allowed the Gusties to claim their first series sweep in conference play this season and improve to 6-4-0 overall and 4-2-0 in MIAC play. Eric Bigham led the Gustavus attack with two goals, while Josh Swartout made 12 saves and picked up the win in the nets.

Stefanie Ubl (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) scored two goals in less than 1:30 in the second period as the Gustavus women's hockey team used a scoring flurry during the decisive period to defeat St. Olaf 7-2 on Saturday night in Northfield, Minn. The Gusties extended their current winning streak over MIAC teams to 14 games dating back to February 3, 2007 with the victory.
