2019 Gustavus Athletics Year in Review

There's no better time to take a look back at the year that was as we prepare to flip the calendar into a new decade. Gustavus Athletics continued to display excellence throughout 2019, so here are a few of the highlights that happened during the past trip around the sun.

Orzolek, Rooney, and Winter Named MIAC Athletes of the Week

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its Men’s and Women's Track & Field Athletes of the Week on Tuesday and Gustavus earned three honors. Taylor Rooney (Jr., Andover) and Tierney Winter (Sr., Waterville) were named Men's and Women's Track Athletes of the Week, while Steven Orzolek (So., Darwin) was named Men's Field Athlete of the Week.

Eight Gusties Compete at Chuck Petersen Open

A small group of the Gustavus men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams kicked off the indoor season Saturday at the Chuck Peterson Open & Multi, hosted by Minnesota State-Mankato. Three athletes on the men’s team and five from the women’s squad competed on Saturday with six Gusties setting lifetime bests, four winning their event, and two breaking school records.

Cross Country/Track Assistant Becki Staley Inducted into Florida Hall of Fame

Gustavus assistant cross country/track & field coach Becki Staley recently added another award to a long list of accolades. Last Friday, Staley was inducted into the University of Florida’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Named USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its annual academic awards Thursday and both the Gustavus men’s and women’s track & field programs have been named All-Academic Teams.

Aaron Lund Named Head Track & Field Coach at Gustavus Adolphus College

Gustavus Adolphus College Athletic Director Tom Brown announced Tuesday that Aaron Lund has been chosen to become the new head coach for the men’s and women’s track & field programs, starting Aug. 1. Lund comes to Gustavus after serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Whittier College (Calif.) for the past three years.

68 Gusties Recognized as 2018-19 MIAC Winter and Spring Academic All-Conference

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) on Thursday announced its 2018-19 Winter and Spring Academic All-Conference Teams, which included 68 Gustavus student athletes. Combined with the 427 MIAC Fall-sport athletes who were honored in January, the overall total of Academic All-Conference selections for the 2018-19 academic year sets a new Conference-high of 1,172, surpassing the previous record of 1,111, set last June.

Nora Holtan, Michael Hensch Selected as 2018-19 Gustavus Athletes of the Year

The Gustavus Adolphus College Athletics Department is pleased to announce the winners of the 19th Annual Gustavus Athlete of the Year awards. The 2018-19 recipients are volleyball setter Nora Holtan (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) and track & field thrower/football defensive end Michael Hensch (Sr., North Branch, Minn.).

Hensch, Keelin Named May Student-Athletes of the Month

Men’s and women's track & field throwing specialists Michael Hensch (Sr., North Branch, Minn.) and Katie Keelin (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) have been selected as the Gustavus Adolphus College Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Month for May, presented by Thrivent Financial and voted on by the Gustavus Sports Information Department.

Hensch Takes Bronze in Hammer at NCAA Outdoor Championships

Gustavus men’s thrower Michael Hensch (Sr., North Branch, Minn.) capped his decorated collegiate career with an All-American third place finish in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
