ST. PAUL, Minn. – For the second time in two days, the Gustavus baseball team earned a doubleheader split on the road. On Tuesday, the Gusties shut out Northwestern-St. Paul 3-0 in game one, but lost 4-3 in game two, moving to 2-2 overall on the season.

Sam Carlson (Jr., St. James, Minn.) gave the Gusties their second consecutive complete game shutout, throwing all seven innings with four hits allowed, three strikeouts, and four walks to earn his first victory of the season.
All three runs in game one came in the fifth inning. Cody Christensen (Sr., Luverne, Minn.) and Brock Peterson (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.) both singled and advanced on a passed ball. Neil Engler (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) then plated Christensen with a sacrifice fly, followed by a single off the bat of Isaiah Welckle (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) to score Peterson. Dan Carlson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) ensued with another single to score Welckle for the third and final run of the frame.
Matt Berkner (Fy., Sleepy Eye, Minn.) and Peterson led the Gusties at the plate, both going 2-for-3.

Northwestern jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first three innings and was able to answer a late-inning comeback by the Gusties for the one-run victory.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth, John Lundquist (So., Rochester, Minn.) belted a solo home run to put the Gusties on the board. The Eagles got a run back in the fifth courtesy of one hit and two Gustavus errors. But the Gusties fired right back with a pair of runs in the sixth to tie the game 3-3. Peterson scored the first run of the frame after reaching on an error, and going station-to-station on singles by Dan Carlson and Sam Warner (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn.), followed by a double by Lundquist, which also scored Carlson.
Northwestern had an answer in the bottom half, though, scoring what proved to be the game-winning run after a double, sacrifice, and a wild pitch.
Casey Lewandoski (So., Fairbanks, Alaska) started on the mound and lasted four and one-third innings. He allowed on earned run on four hits with a strikeout and three walks. Jacob Braun (Jr., Wayzata, Minn.) suffered the loss after one and two-thirds innings of relief. He allowed one run on one hit with a strikeout.
Lundquist paced the Gusties at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI.
Gustavus now prepares for its spring trip, which takes place in Tucson, Ariz. Friday through Wednesday.
