Brad Baker’s first year coaching baseball at Gustavus in over three decades (his first in 1981) proved to be fruitful last season as the Gusties posted their first winning record since 2008 and moved up three spots in the conference standings. But now it’s time to turn to page to the 2017 campaign and see what improvements can be made as Baker and his staff continue to rebuild the program into a contender in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. This season’s journey begins tomorrow with a non-conference doubleheader against Mayville State at US Bank Stadium.

Baseball Sweeps No. 15 St. Thomas With Two Comeback Wins

The Gustavus baseball team put together its most impressive MIAC sweep in years Saturday against the University of St. Thomas. The Gusties used two last-inning comebacks to claim wins of 6-5 and 5-4, sweeping the No. 15 nationally ranked Tommies for the first time since 2001. The victories also ended a seven-game losing streak against St. Thomas dating back to 2012. With the wins, the Gusties improve to 20-18 overall and 9-11 in the MIAC. Gustavus reaches the 20-win mark for the first time since 2008, which is also the last time the Gusties finished with at least a .500 record.

The first game featured a combined 17 runs and 25 hits with the Cardinals winning the shootout 10-7. The second was highlighted by a pitcher’s duel, ending in the Gusties’ favor 3-2. Gustavus moves to 8-8 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC, while the Cardinals are now 13-9 overall and 1-3 in the league.

Baseball Finishes Tucson Invite With Pair Of Wins

The Gustavus baseball team concluded its spring trip Wednesday at the Tucson Invitational with a pair of wins. The Gusties beat Williams 16-7 in the first game followed by a 5-3 victory over Middlebury to improve to 5-7 overall.
