In the second day of competition at the 2011 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships being held on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, it was the Gustavus women’s 200 freestyle relay that shined for the Gustavus women’s swimming and diving team. Kelsey Lucia, Serena Elthon, Dajana Vidovic, and Sarah Hund teamed up to take fifth in the race, Gustavus’ highest finish and the NCAA Championships thus far, with a time of 1:34.57. The group ranked second in the 200 free relay with a time 1:33.66 entering the meet.
Other top performances on the day came from men’s 400 medley and 200 free relays. The group of Paul Kirihara, Billy Schultze, Matt Van Fossen, and Whitaker Davis swam a 3:25.72 to earn the Gusties six points in the 400 medley relay, while Sam DeFranco, Schultze, Drew Hedlund, and Sam Olson-Anstett placed 15th (4 pts) with a time of 1:24.58 in the 200 free relay.
The Gustavus women are in 12th place with 43 points after day two, while the men sit in 21st with 22 points.
Steph Korba and Dajana Vidovic also represented the Gusties in individual races on day two. Korba placed 38th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.12, and Vidovic took 37th in the 200 free with a time of 1:54.92.
The NCAA Championships will continue tomorrow with the preliminary races beginning at 10:00 a.m.
