Women’s Hockey Completes Sweep of St. Olaf

No. 7 Gustavus women’s hockey completed the series sweep over St. Olaf on Sunday with a 5-0 victory. The Gusties improve to 11-2-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the MIAC, while the Oles drop to 0-13-2 overall and 0-8-0 in the league.

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – No. 7 Gustavus women’s hockey completed the series sweep over St. Olaf on Sunday with a 5-0 victory. The Gusties improve to 11-2-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the MIAC, while the Oles drop to 0-13-2 overall and 0-8-0 in the league.

Molly McHugh (Fy., Minnetonka) got the scoring started 6:15 into the game with a goal that proved to be the game-winner. Emily Olson (Fy., Delano) then took advantage of a power play with a goal at the 14:54 mark, assisted by Amelia Vosen (Sr., Anoka), and the Gusties carried a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

McHugh notched her second goal of the night and sixth of the season four minutes into the second period with the help of Grace Schulte (So., Little Falls). Three minutes later, Kristina Press (So., Cottage Grove) tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the season and the visitors held a 4-0 advantage after 40 minutes.

With six minutes left in the game, Hailey Holland (Fy., Aberdeen, S.D.) scored her fourth goal of the season on a power play. Press and Kristen Cash (Sr., Roseville) were credited with the assists.

Francesca Gerardi (Fy., Yonkers, N.Y.) made seven saves in the shutout victory, her second blank sheet of the season, improving to 3-1.

The Gusties outshot the Oles 63-7 and went 2-for-5 on the power play.

Gustavus next faces St. Thomas in a home-home series this upcoming weekend. Friday’s game is at 7 p.m. in Saint Peter and Saturday’s game starts at 7:30 p.m. in Mendota Heights.
