LE SUEUR, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s golf team opened its 2019 fall campaign Friday with a dual loss to St. Thomas at Le Sueur Country Club. The Gusties carded a 10-over 290 while the Tommies posted a six-under 274.

“We were a little tentative on the first half of the front nine today and that cost us some shots, however, I like the way we responded on the back nine as we posted some pretty good numbers coming in,” Head Coach Scott Moe said.

Emmet Herb and Miles McCarthy of St. Thomas topped the leaderboard, both posting 65s. Ben Hauge (Sr., Ramsey, Minn.) led the Gusties with an even-par 70 to tie for fourth. Wyatt Wasko (Fy., Lake Elmo, Minn.) also carded a 70 to lead the second Gustie squad. Carter Czichotzki (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.) was one shot back at 71 for the second team.

Rounding out the lineup for the Gusties’ No. 1 team was Joe Foley (Sr., East Gull Lake, Minn.) at 73, while Jacob Pederson (So., Minnetonka, Minn.), Khrystjan Petersen (Fy., Faribault, Minn.), and Max Ullan (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) all shot a 74.

“The tricky thing about golf is you can’t play defense against a team that plays well and St. Thomas put up a great number today with two guys shooting 65,” Moe said. “I like the way that we grinded and we’re looking forward to sharpening up just a few things as we prepare for next weekend’s tournament. Ben posted a good number for us today with a 33 on the back nine. Wyatt and Carter posted good numbers on our second team.”

Gustavus hits the links next Saturday and Sunday in Maple Plain, Minn. at the St. Thomas Invite.
