Goalkeeper Brett Ylonen kept the Knights out of the net in a complete-game, seven-save effort on Saturday afternoon.
The Carleton men’s soccer team was able to keep the scoreboard lights underneath the Gustavus column reading “0” on Saturday afternoon in Northfield, Minn. – a feat not accomplished by any other team facing the Gusties this season – as the two squads played to a 0-0 tie after two overtime sessions. Gustavus moves to 9-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the MIAC, while Carleton goes to 3-3-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the MIAC.
“We threw absolutely everything we could at them – including the kitchen sink,” commented Head Coach Mike Middleton. “But their goalkeeper was absolutely on fire. He made some fantastic saves that kept them in the game.”
Gustavus fired 17 total shots in the match, seven of which were on goal. Carleton finished with 18 shots, eight were on goal and seven were in the two overtime periods.
Gustavus goalkeeper Brett Ylonen was in nets for all 110 minutes of the contest, recording six saves and moving to 7-1-1 on the year. Carleton netminder James Neher made seven saves in complete-game effort.
Gustavus finished with the corner kick advantage 10-to-5 in the match. Zach Brown led the Gusties with five shots, while Justin Eglseder notched three.
“As the game wore on, we are always more and more vulnerable to getting caught on the break, but our lads did very well to keep their concentration late,” said Middleton. “We ran into a tough Carleton team today so we’re not disappointed in the result and we’re looking forward to get back to it on Tuesday.”
The Gustavus men’s soccer team will return to the Gusties Soccer Field on Tuesday, Oct. 4 for a match against Crown College beginning at 4:00 p.m.
