The Gustavus men’s soccer team needed a little late-game magic in order to force a 1-1 tie with UW-Whitewater in St. Peter. Junior Alex Groth directed a Jordan Iblings pass past Warhawk goalkeeper E.J. Sesselmann with 3:46 left in regulation for the equalizer. UW-Whitewater had broken the scoreless tie a couple of minutes earlier when Ben Volz put a ball past Gustie keeper Trevor Brown.

Although the Gusties were out-shot by UW-Whitewater 13-11, they controlled tempo for much of the game, especially the first overtime. The sixth-ranked Gusties survived a scare in the first half as Brown used every bit of his 6’4″ frame to punch away a pair of close shots by Nathan Haas. Senior Jon Astry led Gustavus offensively with four shots, while Brown was solid in net, picking up six saves.

Gustavus will host Wartburg Sunday at 3 p.m.
