The Gustavus men's soccer team advanced to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship Match against defending national champion Messiah with a 2-1 win over Whitworth College. The national championship match will take place at 4 p.m. (CST) Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. Sophomore Jeffrey Johnson scored the game-winner with 15 minutes to play in regulation.
The Gustavus men's soccer team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the second consecutive year with an impressive 3-0 win over Loras College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Gusties, who improved to 15-2-5, will face Fredonia State (NY) on Saturday at 12:00 pm (CST). Fredonia State advanced by virtue of outscoring host Calvin 3-2 on penalty kicks on Friday afternoon. The winner of Saturday's match will advance to the NCAA Division III Final Four in Greensboro, North Carolina on November 25-26.
The Gustavus men's soccer team moved its record to 8-2-3 with a 3-1 non-conference win over UC-Santa Cruz. UC-Santa Cruz, which entered the match ranked fourth nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, dropped to 10-1-1.
The Gustavus men's soccer team needed a little late-game magic in order to force a 1-1 tie with UW-Whitewater in St. Peter. Junior Alex Groth directed a Jordan Iblings pass past Warhawk goalkeeper E.J. Sesselmann with 3:46 left in regulation for the equalizer. UW-Whitewater had broken the scoreless tie a couple of minutes earlier when Ben Volz put a ball past Gustie keeper Trevor Brown.

Senior defender Joe Hartwell was named the MIAC's Most Valuable Player and earned all-conference honors. Junior midfielders Jonathan Astry and Bobby Kroog were also named to the first team, while senior goalkeeper Andew Moulton received honorable mention.
Senior defender Kelly Keith and sophomore midfielder Amy Larson both received honorable mention for the 2004 MIAC All-Conference team.
The Gustavus men's and women's soccer team will host Loras College, Nebraska Wesleyan University and Concordia College this weekend. The games will be played at 1:00pm and 3:30pm on the stadium field and lower field west of the stadium.
