Johnson and Whaling Take Third at ITA Cup

The Gustavus men’s tennis doubles team of Chase Johnson (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn.) and Patrick Whaling (Sr., Manikin Sabot, Va.) claimed third place Saturday at the ITA Cup, defeating James Wei and Varun Shanker of Caltech 7-5, 6-3 at Berry College. Johnson and Whaling finish the fall season 11-1 overall and as All-Americans. 

Johnson and Whaling to Play for Third Place at ITA Cup

The Gustavus men’s tennis doubles team of Chase Johnson (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn.) and Patrick Whaling (Sr., Manikin Sabot, Va.) lost Friday in the semifinals of the ITA Cup to Emory’s Jonathan Jemison and Adrien Bochet 7-5, 6-1. It’s the first loss of the fall season for Johnson and Whaling as they drop to 10-1 overall. The Gusties will now play for third place Saturday against the loser of Yangeng Jiang/Justin Wang of Bowdoin and James Wei/Varun Shanker of Caltech.

Johnson and Whaling Win First Doubles Match at ITA Cup

The Gustavus men’s doubles team of Chase Johnson (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn.) and Patrick Whaling (Sr., Manikin Sabot, Va.) posted a comeback victory in their first match at the ITA Cup on Thursday, defeating Jordan Pitts and Wilson Lambeth of Trinity (Texas) 3-6, 6-4, 10-5. Johnson and Whaling, now 10-0 on the season, advance to the semifinals Friday.

Three Gustie Tennis Players to Compete at ITA Cup

Three Gustavus tennis players are set to compete in the ITA Cup Thursday at Berry College in Rome, Ga. Women’s singles player Ginger Valentine (So., Delano, Minn.), the fifth seed, will take on No. 4 Venia Yeung of Wesleyan at 9 a.m. The men’s doubles team of Chase Johnson (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn.) and Patrick Whaling (Sr., Manikin Sabot, Va.) will take on Jordan Pitts and Wilson Lambeth of Trinity (Texas) at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Whaling, Johnson, Valentine Named September Student-Athletes of the Month

Tennis players Patrick Whaling (Sr., Manakin Sabot, Va.), Chase Johnson (Sr., Golden Valley, Minn.), and Ginger Valentine (So., Delano, Minn.) have been named Gustavus September Co-Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Month, which is voted on by the Gustavus Sports Information Department and presented by Thrivent Financial.

All Gustavus Doubles Final Highlights Day Three of ITA Midwest Regional

The ITA Midwest Regional Championship completed all but the singles final on Sunday, with an all Gustavus doubles final highlighting the day. Chase Johnson and Patrick Whaling came out on top in the championship doubles match over fellow teammates Yassine Derbani and Nick Aney by a score of 7-6, 6-2. With the victory, Johnson and Whaling solidified themselves as All-Americans.

Men’s Tennis Competes at Drake Invite

The Gustavus men’s tennis team competed for the first time this fall season at the Drake Invite against Division I and II opponents over the weekend.

Alhouni Advances To NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Quarterfinals, Falls In Doubles With Whaling

Mohanad Alhouni (Sr., Tripoli, Libya) and Patrick Whaling (Jr., Manakin Sabot, Va.) competed in the NCAA Men’s Tennis Individual Championships on Thursday and came out with mixed results. Alhouni won his first two singles matches to advance to the national quarterfinals, while he and Whaling lost in the first round of the doubles tournament.

The NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Committee has selected the individuals who will compete in the singles and doubles competition of the 2018 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships and two Gusties have been chosen - Mohanad Alhouni (Sr., Tripoli, Libya) in singles, and Patrick Whaling (Jr., Manakin Sabot, Va.) will pair with Alhouni in doubles.

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its men’s tennis postseason awards Tuesday and four Gusties were recognized as All-Conference members.
