Men’s Soccer Reports For Pre-Season Training

The Gustavus men's soccer team reported to campus on Sunday, August 22 to begin preparations for the 2010 season. Head Coach Mike Middleton begins his first season leading the men's squad after replacing long-time coach Larry Zelenz. The Gusties open regular season play on Saturday, September 4 with a contest against Northland College in Duluth, Minn.

Michael Middleton Named Men’s Head Soccer Coach

Michael Middleton has been named the new head coach of the men’s soccer program at Gustavus Adolphus College. Middleton, a 1983 graduate of Leeds Carnegie College of Physical Education and Recreation in the United Kingdom, is replacing Larry Zelenz, who resigned in May after serving as the men's soccer coach for the past 24 years.

Larry Zelenz, the head men’s soccer coach at Gustavus Adolphus College for the past 24 years and the winningest coach in the program’s history with 280 wins, has announced that he will resign his position as men’s soccer coach and assistant athletics director for intramurals and club sports at the end of the current school year.

Men’s Soccer Player Fraser Horton Named To NSCAA All-Region Team

Gustavus Adolphus College senior Fraser Horton (Missoula, Mont./Hellgate) was named National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III All-North Region Third Team on Tuesday. It is the third time that Horton has received All-Region honors in his four-year career at Gustavus. 13 players from the MIAC were honored, the most of any athletic conference in the region.

Men’s Soccer Loses To #5 Loras 2-0

The Gustavus men's soccer team saw its struggles continue with a 2-0 loss to #5 Loras College in Dubuque on Friday night. The Duhawks, who improved to 9-1-1, scored once in each half on their way to the 2-0 victory. The Gusties, who are now 0-3-1 in their past four games, fall to 4-4-3 on the season.

Men’s Soccer Falls To St. Olaf 1-0

The Gustavus men's soccer team saw its struggles continue with a 1-0 loss to St. Olaf on Saturday in St. Peter. The Gusties are 0-2-1 over the last week scoring only one goal in the three matches. The Oles tallied the gamewinner in the fourth minute of the contest off a header by Nate Swenson.

Men’s Soccer Battles Saint Mary’s To 1-1 Tie In Two Overtimes

The Gustavus men's soccer team got a second half goal from Grant Steine to tie the score at 1-1, but that would be the only goal of the night for the Gusties as they had to settle for a 1-1 tie in two overtimes. Gustavus is now 4-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the MIAC.

Gustavus Adolphus College senior forward Bret VanderStreek (Pella, Iowa) has been named the MIAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week after he scored two goals in the Gusties 2-1 victory over Carleton on Wednesday, and the opening goal in Gustavus' 3-2 win over Concordia on Sunday.

The Gustavus men's soccer team got two goals from Bret VanderStreek, one in each half, and then held off a late Carleton rally to claim a 2-1 win in Northfield on Wednesday afternoon. The contest was the MIAC opener for both squads. The Gusties improve to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the MIAC.

The Gustavus men's soccer team continued to struggle to score goals and battled Simpson College to a 0-0 draw in two overtimes on Sunday afternoon in Indianola, Iowa. Luke Strom made four saves in goal for the Gusties and registered his second consecutive shutout as Gustavus moved to 2-1-2 on the season.
