Malmquist’s Goal In Overtime Allows Men’s Soccer To Defeat Central 1-0

Junior midfielder Max Malmquist scored three minutes into overtime allowing Gustavus to claim a hard-fought 1-0 win over Central College in Pella, Iowa on Saturday morning. The Gusties held an 18-13 advantage in shots and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks, but could not find the net until Malmquist scored to give the Gusties their second win of the season (2-1-1) in the 93rd minute. Gustavus will play Simpson in Indianola, Iowa on Sunday at 4 pm.

Men’s Soccer Suffers First Loss, Falls To Pacific Lutheran University 2-0

The Gustavus men's soccer team dropped to 1-1-1 on the season with a 2-0 loss to Pacific Lutheran University in St. Peter on Monday afternoon. The Lutes scored one goal in each half on their way to improving to 2-1-0 overall. The Gusties had several outstanding scoring opportunities in the match including two shots at a wide open net, but the team was unable to finish any of its chances and the opportunistic Lutes claimed the victory.

Men’s Soccer Battles Whitworth To 1-1 Draw

Just when it seemed like the Gustavus men's soccer team was going to register a hard-fought 1-0 win over visiting Whitworth University, Kekoa Mountcastle scored just over a minute remaining in regulation play to tie the score at 1-1. The two teams played scoreless soccer through two 10 minute overtimes and the result was a 1-1 tie. The Gustavus goal was scored by Justin Eglseder in the 62nd minute with an assist from Fraser Horton.

Gustavus Athletic Teams Begin Fall Sport Season With Super Tuesday

The 2009 fall sport season begins today with five different teams opening their seasons including the men's and women's cross country teams, the men's and women's soccer teams, and the volleyball team. The men's and women's cross country teams run at Northland College at 10:30 am, followed by the women's soccer team playing at Minnesota-Morris at 2:00 pm. The men's soccer team plays Bethany Lutheran College at 4 pm and then the volleyball team hosts St. Olaf in a non-conference match at 7:00 pm.

Men’s Soccer Looks Sharp In Opener, Claims 6-0 Win Over Bethany Lutheran College

The Gustavus men's soccer team took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Mark Adams just three minutes into the match and never looked back on its way to an impressive 6-0 win over Bethany Lutheran College on the Gustavus Soccer Field on Tuesday afternoon. Senior midfielder Fraser Horton tallied two goals, while junior goalkeeper Luke Strom made one save and registered the shutout. The Gusties outshot the Vikings 17-2 in the contest and held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Men’s Soccer Team Reports To Prepare For 2009 Season

Head Coach Larry Zelenz welcomed 42 players to campus on Tuesday, August 18 to begin pre-season practices for the 2009 season. The Gusties open regular season play with a contest against Bethany Lutheran College at home on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 4 pm. Zelenz will build his squad around 13 letterwinners including All-Region midfielder Fraser Horton and All-Conference defender Justin Eglseder.

Fraser Horton, Flynn Stewart-Franzen, and Justin Eglseder Receive Post-Season Honors for Men’s Soccer Team

The Gustavus men's soccer team, which posted a record of 13-5-1 overall and placed second in the MIAC with a mark of 8-2-0, recently had three players named to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference and that group included senior defender Flynn Stewart-Franzen, junior midfielder Fraser Horton, and first year defender Justin Eglseder. Stewart-Franzen and Horton were also named to the NSCAA All-Region Team.

Men’s Soccer Drops MIAC Playoff Match To Augsburg 3-0

The Gustavus men's soccer team saw its 2008 season come to a close with a 3-0 loss to Augsburg in a MIAC Playoff game in St. Peter on Tuesday afternoon. The Auggies exploded for three goals in the second half to claim their first win over the Gusties since Oct. 22, 1997. Gustavus, which finished second in the MIAC in regular season play, completed its season with a mark of 13-5-1.

Men’s Soccer Secures #2 Seed In MIAC Playoffs With 2-1 Win Over St. Thomas

The Gustavus men's soccer team closed out regular season play with a hard fought 2-1 win over St. Thomas in St. Peter on Saturday afternoon. The Gusties jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Mark Adams and Ben Eriksson and then hold off a late Tommie rally to claim the important conference win. Gustavus finished conference play in second place with an 8-2 record and will now host #3 seed Augsburg in St. Peter in the first round of the MIAC Playoffs on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Men’s Soccer Holds On For 3-2 Win At Buena Vista

The Gustavus men's soccer team jumped out to a 3-1 lead against non-conference foe Buena Vista on Sunday, but then had to hold off a late charge from the Beavers to claim a 3-2 win in Storm Lake, Iowa. The Gusties got goals from Max Malmquist, Fraser Horton, and Chris Golv, while Luke Strom picked up the win in goal. Gustavus is now 12-4-1 on the season.
