The Gustavus men's cross country team opened its 2008 season with a solid 12th place finish out of 26 teams. The Gusties were led by senior co-captain Dan Foley, who placed 22nd out of 361 runners with a time of 27:13 over the 8,000 meter course.
The Gustavus men's cross country team will open its 2008 season on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Les Duke Invitational hosted by Grinnell College. Senior captains John Leaf and Dan Foley will lead a veteran squad that includes nine juniors and seniors that lettered last season.
The Gustavus men's cross country team hosted its annual Alumni Meet this past Saturday in the Arboretum. Twenty-seven runners participated in the event including 12 members of the Gustavus team and 15 former Gusties. Mike Henderson, who competed for Gustavus from 1997-2000, James Sorenson, who competed from 2001-04, and Chris deLaubenfels, who competed from 2004-07, finished in a three-way tie for first with a time of 16:28. The top Gustavus runner was Dan Foley who finished fourth in a time of 16:37.

Drew Hood, Chris deLaubenfels, Laura Edlund Named To CoSIDA Academic All-District Track/Cross Country Team
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released its men's and women's Academic All-District Track and Field/Cross Country Teams sponsored by ESPN The Magazine and three Gustavus student athletes were honored including Drew Hood, Chris deLaubenfels, and Laura Edlund.
Gustavus senior Chris deLaubenfels completed his career with a 54th place finish at the 2007 NCAA Men's Cross Country Championship which was run at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. on Saturday. deLaubenfels recorded a time of 25:28 over the 8,000 meter course which was 1:04 behind overall champion Tyler Sigl of University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
On a beautiful fall afternoon, the Gustavus men's cross country team ran its best race of the season finishing fifth with 134 points at the MIAC Cross Country Championships Saturday in St. Paul. The fifth place finish at the conference meet was the highest since 1994 when the squad finished fourth. St. John's claimed its second consecutive title with 49 points. The Gustavus men's cross country team will take part in the MIAC Championships on Saturday at 3 pm at Como Park Golf Course in St. Paul, Minn. The Gusties will be looking to improve on their eighth place finish from a year ago. The 2007 Gustavus men's cross country team looks to improve on its eighth place finish at the conference championships in 2006. Senior Chris deLaubenfels earned all-conference honors a year ago with a 14th place finish.
The Gustavus men's cross country team turned in a 17th-place finish with 459 points at the 25-team Jim Drews Invitational Saturday morning in La Crosse, Wis. UW-La Crosse won the team competition with 75 points and all five runners finishing in the top 20. Senior Chris deLaubenfels (Mount Vernon, Iowa) beat his best time of the season by 30 seconds with a time of 26:38 and a 45th place-finish.
Cross country runner Chris deLaubenfels (Mount Vernon, Iowa) turned in his best finish of the season finishing second in 20:28 at the MSU-Mankato Open in Mankato Saturday. No team scores were kept as Gustavus, MSU-Mankato, and St. Cloud State were the only schools competing in the 6K race. John Leaf was the second Gustie to cross the finish in 12th-place with a time of 21:14. Five Gustavus runners competed in the race.
