MAPLE PLAIN, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s golf team is in third place after the first round of the Pioneer Creek Collegiate. The Gusties shot a nine-over 297 and are 10 strokes behind the leader St. Thomas. Saint John’s is in second at 293.

Ben Hauge (Sr., Ramsey, Minn.) and Max Ullan (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) are leading the Black and Gold, each shooting a 73 in the first round and are tied for 24th. Khrystjan Petersen (Fy., Faribault, Minn.) is one stroke back at 74 and Jacob Pedersen (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) rounded out the first round scoring with a 77. Carter Czichotzki (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.) led the Gustie individuals with a 74.

“Not a bad day today, pretty consistent,” Head Coach Scott Moe said. “We went with a pretty conservative approach for the first round, where par is a good score and hoping that birdies will happen. For the most part, we played smart and didn’t attack tough pins. We eliminated the big holes that got us last week. Pioneer Creek is in great shape and we hope to take advantage of the pure greens tomorrow and roll in some putts.”

Logan Perkins of West Virginia leads the field after carding a five-under 67.

The tournament concludes tomorrow with two more rounds.
