SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s soccer hosted Crown for its home opener and shut out the Storm by a score of 7-0. With the win the Gusties move to 3-0 on the season.

On the contest, Head Coach Tudor Flintham said, “We started the game really well and looked super dangerous from set plays all day. We also did a nice job of pinning them and removing outlets. It’s nice to feel like we put a few different layers together. We had some outrageous combination play and almost scored some more beautiful goals, but seven different goal scorers is a fun thing. Overall we feel like we are improving each day, but we also know we have some massive tests here coming up soon, tomorrow being the biggest against a strong Simpson side. It’s going to be a battle but one we are looking forward to.”

The Gusties got the scoring started early when Raphael Cattelin (Fy., Edina, Minn.) notched his third goal of the year with assists going to Matt Gibbons (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Nolan Garvin (Jr., Batavia, Ill.). The Gusties got two more goals in the first half, with Cody Billins (Sr., Farmington, Minn.) and Nicholas Leach (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) both scoring their first goals of the season. Jarod Petrovich (Sr., Plainfield, Ill.) recorded the assist on Billins’ goal while Leach’s was unassisted.

In the second half Cole Schwartz (So., Jakarta, Indonesia)  kept his scoring streak going with a goal at 52:40 with assists going to Gibbons and Cattelin. Scott Heinen (Jr., Aurora, Ill.) scored 25 seconds later with an assist from Gibbons to extend the lead to 5-0 for the Gusties. The Gusties got two more goals late from Trace Dobson (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and David Jansen (So., Roetgen, Germany). Josh Anderson (Jr., Westmont, Ill.) assisted Dobson, while Nick Summers (Jr., Marshalltown, Iowa) assisted Jansen.

Wesley Sanders (Fy., Urbandale, Iowa) got the win in net for his third victory.

The Gusties will be back in action Sunday when they take on Simpson for a 3 p.m. contest.
