LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Gustavus men’s golf team improved on its first round shot total by five strokes for a round-two score of 293 on Sunday, but did not gain any ground on the leaderboard, finishing in seventh place at the Transylvania Invite. The Gusties shot a 298-293-591. Guilford won the event with a 570, while Greensboro took second at 575 and Ohio Wesleyan placed third at 577.

“Today’s round is a score that is expected out of this team,” Assistant Coach Randy Stuckey said. “It would have been nice to have a practice round on Friday because we were much more familiar with the course today.”

Ben Hauge (So., Ramsey, Minn.) led the Gusties with an eighth place finish, carding a second round 69 – the third best score of the day – for a total of 142. Alec Aunan (Sr., Rock Island, Ill.) was close behind with a total of 145. Joe Foley (So., East Gull Lake, Minn.) posted a 152, Chris Captain (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) a 154, and Carter Czichotzki (Fy., Moorhead, Minn.) a 155.

“Ben Hauge shot an exceptional round,” Stuckey said. “Alec Aunan was on and found a way to score, and Joe Foley improved his score today after becoming familiar with the course. Chris Captain was seven-over after five holes and then shot one-under the next 13 holes. That is the type of finish this team needs and can do. It was a great field and we showed we can compete with the best teams around.”

Next weekend the Gustie men take part in the Eau Claire Invitational on Sept. 10-11.
