ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s and women’s track & field teams are set to compete at the Ted Nelson Classic Saturday, hosted by Minnesota State University-Mankato. The 14-team meet at the Myers Fieldhouse includes Augustana, Bethany Lutheran, Carleton, Concordia-St. Paul, Gustavus, Iowa Central, MSU-Mankato, Northwest Missouri, Sioux Falls, St. Cloud State, St. Olaf, Upper Iowa, UW-La Crosse, and Waldorf. Field events begin at 11 a.m. and running events begin at noon.
Last time out: The Gusties competed at the St. Olaf Quadrangular last Friday at the Tostrud Center. The men took second with 146 points, while the women took fourth with 113 points. St. Thomas won on both the men’s and women’s sides with 203.5 and 196 points, respectively.
The men’s team received three first place finishes on the day, highlighted by Kyle Fredrickson’s (Sr., Victoria, Minn.) lifetime personal best time of 1:21.02 in the 600 meter. Ed ReMine (Sr., Mantorville, Minn.) was close behind in third place with a personal best time of 1:23.48. Evan Jones (Sr., Pella, Iowa) took first in the 5000 meter at 16:00.42, and Alvin Onkware (Fy., Bloomington, Minn.) won his second consecutive triple jump with a distance of 12.76 meters.
Other notable performances include Trevor Maxwell (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) taking second in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.86 after stumbling over a hurdle; Ryley Sandberg (Jr., Polk City, Iowa) third in the 800 at 2:00.73; Nelson Finne (So., Elgin, Minn.) third in the 1000 at 3:03.37 and fourth in the high jump at 1.75 meters; and Derek Huntley (Sr., Maplewood, Minn.) third in the pole vault clearing 4.28 meters.
The women’s team garnered two first place finishes and a number of personal bests. Kayla Stowell (So., Le Sueur, Minn.) took first in the 60 meter with a time of 7.96. The 4×200-meter relay team of Stowell, Adonya Gray (Fy., Burnsville, Minn.), Lindsey Schmidt (Fy., Bloomington, Minn.), and Lily Anderson (Fy., Waterville, Minn.) also claimed gold with a time of 1:51.42. Anderson also took third in the 200 at 27.51 and fifth in the 400 at 1:03.32. Siri Olson (Fy., Northfield, Minn.) set a personal record with a throw of 10.5 meters in the shot put. A pair of PRs were set in the weight throw as Katie Keelin (Fy., Burnsville, Minn.) took third with a toss of 11.92 meters and Courtney Erickson (Fy., Starbuck, Minn.) took sixth at 11.02 meters. Sadie Novak-Klug (Jr., Waseca, Minn.) set a PR in the 1000, finishing fourth in 3:06.93. In her first time running the 3000, Gabby Passmore (Fy., Mapleton, Minn.) placed third in 11:09.32. Emily Sands (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) also claimed a bronze in the 5000 with a time of 19:14.94.
