WINONA, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team lost to Saint Mary’s 3-1 Saturday, dropping to 2-14-4 overall and 1-9-1 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Cardinals improve to 11-8-3 overall and 7-5-1 in the league.

Saint Mary’s took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission after a pair of power play goals. The first was scored at the 10:36 mark and the second at the 16:35 mark. The Cardinals took a 3-0 advantage with 3:33 remaining in the second period on an even-strength score.

It would take until the 13:43 mark of the third period for Gustavus to end the shutout as Alex Koopmeiners (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) notched his second goal of the season, assisted by Nick Sheak (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) and Sam Majka (Sr., Wayzata, Minn.). But the home team was able to hold off the Gusties the rest of the way to secure the 3-1 victory.

Gustavus was outshot 34-18, marking the second fewest shots taken this season. The Gusties also went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Cardinals were 2-for-3 on the man advantage. Faceoffs were nearly even with Saint Mary’s edging the Gusties 30-29.

Chris Amsden (So., St. Peter, Minn.) suffered the loss after making 31 saves.

Gustavus and Saint Mary’s complete the series at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
