Women’s Indoor Track and Field Dominates Field Events At Pre-MIAC Meet

The Gustavus women’s indoor track and field team won each of the six field events at the Pre-MIAC Meet hosted by Macalester College on Friday in St. Paul. Janey Helland (So., Mapleton, Minn.) highlighted the day for the Gusties as she broke her school record in the long jump with a NCAA provisional qualifying distance of 18′ 1.5″. No team scores were kept at the six-team meet, which included Bethel, Carleton, Concordia, Hamline, Gustavus, and host Macalester.

The strongest event for the Gusties was in the shot put where they finished in the top four spots. Kaelene Lundstrum (Jr., Bird Island, Minn.) won the event with a NCAA provisional throw of 42′ 5.5″ followed by Lisa Brown (Sr., Lake Crystal, Minn.) in second at 42′ 1.25″, Sam Broderius (So., Hector, Minn.) in third (41′ 5.25″), and Sam Nothem (So., West Bend, Wis.) in fourth (36′ 10.5″).

Gustavus swept the jumping events as Helland claimed first in the long jump (18′ 1.5″), Lundstrum won the high jump at a NCAA provisional height of 5′ 5.75″, and Becca Bryson (Jr., Alden, Minn.) took first place in the triple jump after recording a distance of 34′ 9.5″. Laura Lynch (Sr., Waunakee, Wis.) also finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 33′ 10.75″.

In the weight throw, the Gusties were first and second as Anna Bauer (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) and Diana Scott (Jr., Bristol, Conn.) posted results of 49′ 10.5″ and 47′ 6.25″, respectively. Pole vault yielded a similar first and second place finish for Gustavus as Kelly Nelson (Jr., Milaca, Minn.) won the event after clearing a height of 10′ 7″, and Meredith Halling (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) finished second with a mark of 10′ 1.25″.

In the running events, second place results came from Lundstrum was second in the 55-meter hurdles (9.02), Erica Roelofs (Fy., Vernon Center, Minn.) in the 400 meters (1:02.76), Megan Lundgren (So., Mankato, Minn.) in the 800 meters (2:21.94), and Vanessa Jones (Sr., Grand Forks, N.D.) in the 3,000 meters (11:09.23). Third-place finishers included Dani Serbus (So., Franklin, Minn.) in the 55-meter dash (7.78), Julia Thompson (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.) in the 200 meters (27.91), Abby Karl (So., St. Cloud, Minn.) in the 800 meters (2:23.74), and Jill Fagerstrom (Sr., Rosemount, Minn.) in the 3,000 meters (11:13.93). Gustavus also took second in the 4×200 relay (1:50.37) and the 4×400 relay (4:10.23).

The competition was the final meet for the Gusties before the MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Concordia College next weekend in Moorhead, Minn.
