The Gustavus softball team stayed perfect at the Tucson Invitational on Monday, March 24 with wins over Lawrence University and the University of Chicago. The Gusties defeated Lawrence 9-1 in six innings in the early game and held off a seventh-inning rally from the University of Chicago in a 6-5 win. Gustavus, which improved to 6-2 overall, will face Kalamazoo and Luther on Tuesday, March 25.

Julie Mahre helped trigger the Gustie offense at the top of the batting order against Lawrence, as she went 3-for-3 with a home run in fifth inning. Rachael Click also went 2-for-2 from the plate with a home run in the fifth inning as well. Callie Nelsen and Betsie Collins combined to pitch a three-hitter, as Nelsen threw six strikeouts and did not walk a batter in five innings of work.

Erin Truebenbach pitched six innings against the University of Chicago allowing only two runs on one hit. Julie Mahre finished the day a perfect 6-for-6 as she went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Dani Cattrysse hit her first collegiate home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cattrysse’s home run proved to be the difference in the game as the University of Chicago scored three runs in the top of the seventh before being retired.
