SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s soccer team took a 1-0 victory over the UW-Whitewater Warhawks. With the win, the Gusties improve to 10-4 overall and remain 4-2 in the conference.
“We are really happy with the bounce back,” said Head Coach Tudor Flintham. “After yesterday’s game we needed a response and also a second half where the guys showed real determination and fight. “
After a scoreless first half that saw the Gusties outshoot the Warhawks 7-1, Trace Dobson (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) scored his second goal of the season at the 57:33 mark assisted by Owen Johnson (Fy., Apple Valley) which proved to be the game-winner. Gustavus finished the match outshooting UW-Whitewater 15-4 and 13-3 on corner kicks.
“Trace Dobson stepped up in a big way, as he has all season. I’m happy he earned a well deserved goal. Our defense played really well and another clean sheet is big. And while he didn’t get his goal, Alex Krumenauer finally being back for us is massive, the kid is special and it’s fun to see him playing again.”
Egan Bedwell (Fy., Milwaukee, Wis.) was credited with his sixth win of the season and remains undefeated.
“We made it harder on ourselves than it needed to be. We could have gone into the half with a multiple goal lead. We were faced with a challenge in the match after a red card, but in all honesty, maybe we learned something different about ourselves in that situation than we would have in a comfortable 5-0 win.”
The Gusties are next in action when they take on Concordia for a conference match in Collegeville with a 3:00 kick-off on Wednesday.
