SUPERIOR, Wis. – Emily Olson’s (Fy., Delano) hat trick backed by shut-down defense propelled No. 4 Gustavus women’s hockey to a 3-0 win over UW-Superior on Tuesday night. The Gusties improve to 18-3-2 overall with their fifth straight win, while the Yellowjackets drop to 15-7-1.

“It was a long bus trip for a Tuesday night game, but I was pleased with how well we played, especially defensively,” Head Coach Mike Carroll said.

It didn’t take Olson long to light the lamp as she netted her first goal 49 seconds into the game with the help of Amelia Vosen (Sr., Anoka). Nearly five minutes later, Olson found the back of the net again and the Gusties held a 2-0 lead after the first period.

After a scoreless second period, Olson completed the hat trick 1:16 into the third on a power play. Clara Billings (Fy., Rochester) passed to Jordyn Peterson (So., Brookings, S.D.), who took a shot which was tipped in by Olson for her eighth goal of the season.

“It was good to see that performance out of Emily because she’s been battling through some sickness,” Carroll said. “Hopefully this will give her a boost of confidence along with that whole line.”

Katie McCoy (Fy., Grafton, Wis.) recorded her fifth shutout of the season, tying a season-high 34 saves. McCoy is now 8-1-2 on the season.

“Katie played really well considering she faced a lot more shots than she’s used to seeing,” Carroll said.

The Gusties outshot the Yellowjackets 42-34 and went 1-for-4 on the power play. UW-Superior went 0-for-2 on the skater advantage.

Gustavus, holding the MIAC lead by one point, faces Bethel in its final regular season conference series this weekend. Friday night’s game at Bethel begins at 7 p.m. and Saturday’s rematch is 2 p.m. in Saint Peter.
