SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team will be back in action this weekend for a home-home series versus Saint Mary’s. The two teams will match up Friday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink for a 7:05 contest before traveling to Winona Saturday for a 7 p.m game. The Gusties enter the contests 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC while the Cardinals are 2-4-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Gustavus Game Notes

The Series: Friday’s contest will mark the 129th all-time meeting between the two programs with Gustavus holding a 79-42-7 edge. After four straight wins from Saint Mary’s in 2016-17 and 2017-18, the teams split last season, with the Cardinals winning 2-0 on Jan. 26 and the Gusties winning 5-1 on the Jan. 27.

Scouting the Gusties: Gustavus comes into the contest most recently splitting with No. 8 Augsburg last weekend. Through eight contests the Gusties average 2.13 goals per game while allowing the second least in the MIAC at 2.12. Gustavus has been strong on the power play this year, scoring seven goals in 32 chances for a conversion percentage of 21.9, which ranks second in the conference. The Gusties are led by Caleb Anderson (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Tyler Rock (Jr., Savage), who each have two goals and four assists for six points, while Logan Norman (Jr., Luverne) has scored a team-best four goals. Robbie Goor(Jr., Anoka) has gotten the most work in net, making 138 saves while allowing 10 goals for a save percentage of .932.

Scouting the Cardinals: Saint Mary’s is most recently coming off a 3-2 loss to MSOE on Nov. 26. Through seven games Saint Mary’s scores 2.57 goals per game, which is good for fourth most in the MIAC, while allowing 3.35. The Cardinals have also allowed the fewest power play goals in the league with four, but have struggled on the power play, converting on just 17.1 percent of attempts. Saint Mary’s is led by Jack Stang and Tommy Stang with eight and seven points, respectively, while Kyle Meeh leads the team with four goals.  Nick Nast has started six contest in net, making 165 saves while allowing 18 goals for a save percentage of .902.
