APPLETON, Wis. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team opened its season with a 5-2 win over Lawrence University Friday. The win puts the Gusties at the 1-0 on the season while the Vikings fall to 0-2.

“Great first win,” Head Coach Brett Petersen said. “I am happy for the guys as they played really hard. It was great to see some balanced scoring from multiple lines and our defensive core got on the scoresheet as well. Late in the game when we got into penalty trouble, Robbie [Goor] (Jr., Anoka) stood tall, made some key saves and shut the door in goal.”

The Gusties opened the scoring with a Logan Norman (Jr., Luverne) goal to go up 1-0 early in the first with assists going to Caleb Anderson (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Nick Klishko (Jr., San Diego, Calif). A few minutes later, Klischko found the back of the net with a short-handed goal assisted by Anderson and Jared Bromberg (Sr., Rochester) to put the Black and Gold up 2-0.

The Vikings responded late in the first period to bring the score to 2-1 before the teams went to the first intermission. In the second period, neither team scored, but the teams picked up the pace again in the third frame.

The Gusties got it started in the final period just over three minutes in when they got a power play goal from Connor Clemons (So., Savage), with Anderson and Toby Sengvongxay (So., Luverne) getting assists. Gustavus kept their momentum rolling as Sengvongxay scored a goal with Will LeNeave (Jr., Medina) notching the assist to go up 4-1, but Lawrence halted that momentum quickly with a goal of their own to pull the lead within two.

Goor got the win in the net for Gustavus, making 26 saves, including 15 in the third period, while allowing the two goals.

The Gusties will take on Lawrence again tomorrow in Appleton at 4 p.m.
