SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s and women’s swim and dive teams competed in the Gustie Challenge this weekend taking home a lot of top times. Tanner Sonnek (Sr., North Mankato, Minn.) finished his final meet at Vic Gustafson pool in style breaking the pool record in the 200 yard breaststroke when he notched a time of 2:04.98

“It was his last individual swim of the meet in our pool and for him to step up was great to see,” Head Coach Jon Carlson said of Sonnek’s performance. “He’s never really been able to put together a good 200 breast in our pool until today and it was absolutely magical. He left no doubt about it breaking it by at least three seconds.”

The men took 19 first place finishes in the event:

The women also took a bunch of top finishes with 12 winners:

The Gusties will next be in action on Feb. 14-17 for the MIAC Championships in Minneapolis. Many of the times clocked today will determine who races for Gustavus at the conference meet.

“I though it went really well,” Carlson said of the team’s overall performance. “I can’t believe some of the times kids were able to pop off and they’ll make the decision very tough. It’s going to be a late night tonight.”
