WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Gustavus gymnastics team Saturday took third at a triangular hosted by UW-Whitewater, scoring 180.525. UW-Whitewater won the meet with 183.375 points and Winona took second with 182.650.

“It was our third meet in a week and that certainly showed out there,” Head Coach Aryn DeGrood said. “We struggled mightily on beam. Luckily, we were able to recover on the other three events.”

The Gusties scored 45.975 on vault, 45.950 on floor, 44.500 on bars, and 44.100 on beam.

Sam Ardy (Sr., Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Amanda Malo (Sr., Greenwood, Minn.) highlighted the meet for the Gusties as Ardy won the all-around, scoring 37.425, and Malo won the bars with a 9.475. Ardy took second to Malo on the bars at 9.425 and placed fifth on the beam at 9.425.

Malo posted the top vault score for the Gusties, taking sixth with a 9.250. She also tallied a 9.450 on the floor for sixth place to lead the team. Malo’s all-around score of 37.075 took second. Brooke Merila (Fy., St. Michael, Minn.) also competed in all four events for a total of 36.300.

“Individually, Sam and Malo had a great overall day,” DeGrood said. “The entire bar line up was a huge bright spot for us. Brooke Merila had a great day as well with a career high in the all around.”

Gustavus next competes at Centenary on Friday.
