SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s hockey team used a strong second period to build a 3-0 lead that it added three more to in the third to win 6-0. With the win, the Gusties move to 10-5-3 overall and 6-3-2 in MIAC play while the Cardinals fall to 6-8-4 overall and 3-6-2 in conference play.
“We’ve been in a lot of close games lately score wise and Saint Mary’s played really hard and played well but we took advantage of some opportunities that we haven’t been taking advantage of in recent games,” said head coach Mike Carroll. “I was happy that we were able to get a couple power plays goals, stay out of the penalty box, and just roll lines out and play.”
The game got off to a slow start with neither team really getting anything going in the first period. The Gusties outshot the Cardinals 10-4 but couldn’t muster a goal.
In period number two the Black and Gold got rolling early by scoring three goals in the first 3:19. Amelia Vosen (Jr., Nowthen, Minn.) got the scoring started at the 1:17 mark when scored on a rebound off a Lilia Scheid (Fy., Stillwater, Minn.) shot to put the Gusties on the board. At the 2:56 mark Scheid made a centering pass to Vosen who took a shot that was saved but Allie Stanger (Sr., Paynesville, Minn.) was there for a rebound to give the home team a two-goal lead. Just 23 seconds later, Jordyn Peterson (Fy., Brookings, S.D.) scored her first goal of the season a breakaway to put Gustavus up 3-0.
In period number three the Gusties kept adding onto their lead by notching three power play goals. Stanger added another goal on a defletion at the 5:37 mark with assists going to Kayla Vrieze (Fy., Eagan, Minn.) and Vosen. Gustavus got another goal at the 11:38 mark when Hanna Mutschelknaus (Brandon, S.D.) scored her first goal of the year assisted by Peterson and Madigan Goldsworthy (Fy., Chaska, Minn.). With less than two minutes remaining Kristina Press (Fy., Cottage Grove, Minn.) got in the scoring column on a rebound off a shot from Stephanie Anderson (Fy., Blaine, Minn.) with an assist going to Peterson.
Amanda DiNella (Sr., Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.) got the start in net and stopped all 15 Cardinal shots to get the shutout victory.
Gustavus was not penalized one time in the contest. It is the first contest of the year the Gusties have accomplished the feat.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow for a 4 p.m. contest in Winona, Minn.
