JORDAN, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s golf team finished the MIAC Championship a day early in Jordan, Minn. and took home second place honors. All golfers took on two full rounds Sunday as the weather in Monday’s forecast looked like it may be unfavorable. The Gusties came out and shot the best total score on both the day’s rounds but were unable to overcome the 16 stroke deficit. St Thomas came out victorious on the event winning the MIAC Championship for second consecutive season.

Jacob Pedersen (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) won medalist honors in the event by a four stroke margin as he finished the event with rounds of 69 and 71. This is the second consecutive year the Gusties have had a medalist in the MIAC Championship with Alec Aunan being a co-champion in the event last year. Max Ullan (So., Blaine, Minn.), coming off MIAC player of the week honors continued his stellar play carding rounds of 73 and 71 to earn himself a spot on the All-Championship team with an eighth place overall finish and Ben Hauge (Jr., Ramsey, Minn.) finished his fall season with some solid rounds as he posted scores of 76 and 71. In round three, the Gusties shot a score of 288, which was their lowest score of the fall season.

About the event, coach Scott Moe said, “Yesterday put us behind the eight ball, but we knew that with 36 holes today, we would have a chance. We saw some putts drop this morning that gave us some momentum and got great rounds from Thomas Carlson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) and Max to go along with Jacob’s score of 69 to give us a score of three over, 291. We were just nine strokes back with a full round to play which was big for us. We were playing well and got off to another good start and other teams started fading a bit in the last round and making more bogeys. We had a lot of looks but we just missed a few chances. We played really well today shooting just three over in 36 holes in what were fairly tough conditions. Ben put together a great round this afternoon and Jacob had such a fantastic overall tournament. Our conference has so many good players and to win the last few rounds by that margin is impressive. I was just really proud of our battle today.”

The Gusties concluded their fall season with today’s rounds and will look to build off of their performances when they get back in action in the Spring.
