DES MOINES, Iowa – The Gustavus men’s tennis team competed for the first time this fall season at the Drake Invite against Division I and II opponents over the weekend.

Patrick Whaling and Chase Johnson won the “A” doubles draw, going 4-0. Whaling and Johnson defeated duos from Northwest Missouri State (6-2), Creighton (6-3), Drake (6-4), and Nebraska (6-2).

”The guys competed well all weekend against some outstanding competition,” Head Coach Tommy Valentini said. “Certainly Patrick and Chase winning the A flight doubles title was a highlight because of the poise they showed in every match, but overall everyone made positive strides. It was great to see our new leaders debut in a competition setting, and I was thrilled by the way in which the new team members who played this weekend represented our culture in their first time playing for us. We’ll look to grow from this experience as we face the exciting challenges that next weekend will bring.”

The Drake Invite was a tune up for the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, which Gustavus is hosting next Friday through Monday.
