NORMAL, Ill. – The Gustavus men’s golf team kicked off its spring season Saturday with a round at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational and took third of 15 teams with a score of 300. Host Illinois Wesleyan won the event with a score of 289 and UW-Eau Claire took second at 297.

“It was really cold out there today but our guys grinded and played really well,” Head Coach Scott Moe said. “Real feel was right about freezing all day long. We came in ready to play and ready to compete. 300 on a day like today was a really good score.”

Alec Aunan (Sr., Rock Island, Ill.) led the team, tying for ninth place, carding a round of one-over 73. Thomas Carlson (So., Plymouth, Minn.) competed as an individual and also posted a 73, a career-low. Ben Hauge (So., Ramsey, Minn.) tied for 16th, one stroke back of Aunan and Carlson. Chris Captain (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) tied for 19th with a 75, Max Ullan (Fy., Blaine, Minn.) tied for 43rd at 78, and Joe Foley (So., East Gull Lake, Minn.) tied for 74th at 83.

“Our top three scores were very solid,” Moe said. “Great top ten finish for Alec and TC as an individual posting his career-low round. Nice to see some depth and the guys played great for a first competitive round this spring.”

Gustavus will host the Bobby Krig Invite next Sunday and Monday at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan (Sunday) and the Le Sueur Country Club (Monday), depending on the weather and snow-melt.
