WINONA, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s hockey team played to a 1-1 overtime draw Friday night at Saint Mary’s. The tie moves the Gusties to 12-2-4 overall and 6-2-3 in the MIAC, while the Cardinals move to 7-9-2 overall and 4-5-2 in the league.
It didn’t take long for the Gusties to light the lamp as Sydney Henrichs (Fy., Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal 1:19 into the game. Taylor Nelson (So., Plymouth, Minn.) helped on the even-strength goal, marking the first assist of her collegiate career. The Cardinals answered with 1:41 remaining in the opening frame and that would stand as the final score of the contest.
“Their goalie made some big saves, especially in the last half of the game, but we didn’t take advantage of our power play opportunities,” Head Coach Mike Carroll said. “The other team worked hard with a lot of stick checks and a lot of blocked shots. We just have to learn from it and play a lot better tomorrow.”
Gustavus peppered the Saint Mary’s goal all night, out-shooting the Cardinals 43-10, including a 12-1 difference in the third period and 8-0 advantage in the five-minute overtime. The Gusties went 0-for-3 in the power play and held the home team scoreless in its two skater-advantages. The Black and Gold also controlled the dots, winning the faceoff battle 36-12.
Amanda DiNella (Jr., Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.) made nine saves in goal.
Gustavus and Saint Mary’s conclude the series at 2 p.m. tomorrow in St. Peter.
