MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Gustavus men’s golf team turned in a team score of 307 (+19) to stand in 11th of 15 squads after round one of the Wynlakes Intercollegiate Invite Monday at Wynlakes Golf & Country Club.
The No. 1-nationally ranked host school Huntingdon College went eight-under-par to post a team score of 280 and claim the first place position after day one.
“I thought we would have been a little sharper than we were today,” said Head Coach Scott Moe. “It is certainly a different feel from practice to competition. We played a little tight which is not unusual this time of year, but we need to make more out of our misses and take advantage of some good shots.”
Alec Aunan (Jr. Rock Island, Ill.) fired a team-low score of 73 today and is tied for 10th place. Chris Captain (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) and Alex Koopmeiners (Sr., St. Cloud, Minn.) followed, each carding a 75 and are tied for 23rd.
T10: Aunan – 73 (+1)
T23: Captain – 75 (+3)
T23: Koopmeiners – 75 (+3)
T45: Ben Hauge (Fy., Ramsey, Minn.) – 78 (+6)
T62: Max Savini (So., Ramsey, Minn.) – 81 (+9)
T69: Sam Majka (Sr., Wayzata, Minn.) – 84 (+12)
“I saw some good things,” Moe commented. “Alec played really solid, Chris and Koopmeiners put together good scores, but overall we need to be better tomorrow, and I know we will be.”
The second and final round begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun tomorrow.
