Tennis Teams Begin NCAA Tournament Journeys Thursday & Saturday
The Gustavus Adolphus College men's and women's tennis teams begin their NCAA Tournament journeys this Thursday and Saturday. The women's team will travel to Whitewater, Wis. for their first round matchup with Wheaton College on Thursday at 4 p.m., while the men will head to Chicago and will play their first match against Coe College on Saturday at 10 a.m.
McKenzie Swenson Named to Women’s Golf All-Conference Team
Gustavus Adolphus College women’s golfer McKenzie Swenson (So., Buffalo, Minn.) has been named to the 2016 MIAC All-Conference Team that was announced Monday. The honor is the second in a row for Swenson who just completed her second year of collegiate golf.
Baseball Season Finale At UW-Superior Cancelled, Gusties Finish 20-18 Overall
The Gustavus baseball team’s doubleheader at the University of Wisconsin- Superior scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday has been cancelled due to expected inclement weather. Since the non-conference doubleheader was last on the schedule, the Gusties complete their 2016 campaign with a 20-18 overall record and 9-11 mark in the MIAC, which tied for sixth in the league standings.
Jacob Volness Named MIAC Baseball Pitcher-Of-The-Week
The Gustavus baseball team swept a pair of MIAC doubleheaders against the last two conference champions to push its winning streak to six in a row. Senior pitcher Jacob Volness (Cokato, Minn./Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted) came up big on the mound to earn a win in each series, as he went 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA, with just two earned runs allowed in 10 innings on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. For his performance the MIAC sports information directors honored Volness Monday with the final MIAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Week award of the season.

Picture your stereotypical college-bound high school senior. Ready for a new chapter. Excited for a new set of surroundings. And maybe most significantly, eager to put a bit of distance between themselves and their parents. Now, meet Cal and Grace Carlson. While each have strived to carve their own niche following their graduation from Saint Peter High School, the sisters are doing so close to home as student-athletes at Gustavus Adolphus College. Cal, a junior, is a member of the women’s tennis team, while Grace, a first-year, competes on the women’s swimming and diving squad. The catch? Their father, Jon Carlson, is head coach of both of those teams, and their mother, Heidi, is an assistant coach on the women’s tennis team.
Men’s Tennis Claims Sixth Straight MIAC Playoff Championship With 5-0 Win Over Carleton
The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s tennis team secured its sixth consecutive and ninth overall MIAC Playoff Championship with a 5-0 victory over Carleton College on Sunday afternoon at the Brown Outdoor Courts. The Gusties cruised to three doubles wins before earning the playoff crown with wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions.
Baseball Sweeps No. 15 St. Thomas With Two Comeback Wins
The Gustavus baseball team put together its most impressive MIAC sweep in years Saturday against the University of St. Thomas. The Gusties used two last-inning comebacks to claim wins of 6-5 and 5-4, sweeping the No. 15 nationally ranked Tommies for the first time since 2001. The victories also ended a seven-game losing streak against St. Thomas dating back to 2012. With the wins, the Gusties improve to 20-18 overall and 9-11 in the MIAC. Gustavus reaches the 20-win mark for the first time since 2008, which is also the last time the Gusties finished with at least a .500 record.
Track & Field Teams Compete at Meet of the UnSaintly
The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s and women’s track and field teams took part in their final regular season meet before the MIAC Championships this weekend at the Hamline University Meet of the UnSaintly held at the Klas Track and Field Complex. The women's team tallied eight top-5 finishes, while the men notched six. No team scores were kept at the meet.
Women’s Tennis Blanks Carleton 5-0 To Claim MIAC Playoff Title & National Tournament Bid
The Gustavus Adolphus College women’s tennis team is going dancing. A doubles sweep and two straight-set singles wins gave the Gusties a 5-0 victory over Carleton College on Saturday afternoon at the Bell Field Tennis Courts. The win clinches Gustavus its first conference playoff title since 2011, and the Gusties also earn an automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships.
One Big Inning Proves Too Much To Overcome, Softball Ends Season With 5-3 Loss To Hamline
Much like in the opening game of the MIAC Softball Playoffs yesterday for Gustavus, the Gusties were unable to rebound after allowing a four-run inning, losing 5-3 to Hamline on Saturday in an elimination game. The Gusties finish the season 26-12 overall and finished second in the MIAC standings with a 17-5 league record.
