NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving squad competed in a dual meet Friday night at St. Olaf College and escaped with a 153-145 victory.

“Pretty amazing night, lots of great racing,” said Head Coach Jon Carlson. “It was a true team effort, there were so many events that could have gone either way but the team showed a lot of heart, especially in the last 25 of virtually every race. The divers dove great, they were a very important element in our success tonight. I think it got the team pretty fired up for the rest of the season.”

The men’s victory results in the first time they have taken down St. Olaf in seven years.

Tanner Sonnek (So., North Mankato, Minn.) and Matt Allison (Fy., Grand Rapids, Minn.) led the way for the Gusties, each earning three top finishes.

Sonnek posted a time of 57.94 to earn the first place crown in the 100-yard breaststroke, a finals time of 2:09.69 in the 200-yard breaststroke, and finally a finals time of 2:00.46 in the 200-yard in the indivudual medley for this third title.

Allison posted a first place finals time of 1:47.83 in the 200-yard freestyle, a time of 22.21 in the 50-yard freestyle, and a 100-yard freestyle time of 48.39.

In one-meter diving, Logan Bican (Fy., Monticello, Minn.) registered a final score of 263.05. With his score, Bican is a NCAA qualifier.

Tomorrow the Gusties travel to Sioux City, Iowa to take part in the Morningside Invitational at 1 p.m.
