Swimming And Diving Teams To Compete At St. Olaf And Morningside Posted on November 10th, 2016 by

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are set to compete against St. Olaf College Friday night in Northfield, Minn and at Morningside College Saturday afternoon.

The St. Olaf meet is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at Skoglund Natatorium. The Morningside Invitational is set for a 12:00 p.m. start Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa.

Last weekend, the Swimming and Diving squads opened the season hosting the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Minnesota State, Mankato at Vic Gustafson Pool.

The Gustavus men were outlasted by UW-Superior in 32 events. The Gusties owned five top finishes.

Tanner Sonnek (So., North Mankato, Minn.) finished first in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke. He owned a final time of 58.73 in the 100-yard and finished 10 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor at 2:10.77 in the 200-yard. Several Gustie first-years performed well in their first meet in Black and Gold. Zach Dawson (Fy., Apple Valley, Minn.) came in first in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:16.55. Jacob Carlson (Fy., Chisago Lakes, Minn.) also earned a first place finish with 248.65 points in the one-meter dive. Carson Scholberg (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) owned the first place crown in the three-meter dive with 254.7 points.

The Gustie women 689 points to earn a second place finish of three teams.

Preseason All-American Kate Reilly (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) owned the sole top finish for the Gusties, posting a time of 58.99 in the 100-yard butterfly. Reilly was also edged by just a second in the 100-yard freestyle to claim a runner-up finish. Linnea Rizzo (So., Woodbury, Minn.) posted a second place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a finals time of 11:17.31. Rizzo was just two seconds behind Sam Johnston of Minnesota State. Another runner-up finish came from Sydney Hallmark (So., Cedarburg, Wis.) in the 200-yard butterfly as she posted a time of 2:19.69. Haley Pesik (So., Eagan, Minn.) was just a couple of seconds behind Taylor Bass of Minnesota State in the 500-yard freestyle, turning in a finals time of 5:26. The final two Gustie second place finishes came from the 200-yard freestyle and medley relays.

A season ago, Gustavus hosted St. Olaf. The men suffered a 181-118 loss while the women prevailed, 153-141.
