COON RAPIDS, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s golf team turned in a team score of 328 (+40) and are in fourth place after day one of the 2016 MIAC Championships at Bunker Hills Golf Club.

St. Catherine University sits atop the team leaderboard as the Wildcats went 31-over-par to post a team score of 319.

Jessica Nelson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) carded a season-low round of 77 (+5) to lead the Black and Gold and sits tied for third place. Nelson shot a consistent 18-holes, posting 13 pars and one birdie.

“Nelson had a very good round as was fun to watch,” said Assistant Coach Randy Stuckey.

As a team the Gusties ranked first among the competition with 47 pars on the round. The Gusties rank among the top-half of 50 total competitors after day one.

Mae Meierhenry (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Kristen Cash (Fy., Roseville, Minn.) each shot an 11-over-par score of 83 and are tied for 16th place.

McKenzie Swenson (Jr., Buffalo, Minn.) and Morgan Bleyhl (Fy., Elk River, Minn.) both turned a score of 85 (+13) to share a spot in 23rd place.

“I think the gals put us in a good position for the rest of the tournament,” Stuckey said. “Their body language, effort, and commitment to their game was exceptional but it just did not show in our scoring.”

Round two of three begins tomorrow at 10:50 a.m.
