NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s cross country team took second place out of 14 teams Saturday at Carleton’s Running of the Cows, scoring 128 points. Loras College averaged a time of 26:11.7 and totaled 42 points to take first place.
The Black and Gold averaged an 8k time of 26:52.8 to record their third top-three finish of the season.
“Overall placement wise, we were looking to be in that range,” said Head Coach Dale Bahr. “We talked about it as a group and decided that we did not race well. All things considered, if we don’t race well or have a bad day while taking second, we have to be pretty happy with it.”
Thomas Knobbe (Sr., Decorah, Iowa) continues to pace the Gusties as he placed eighth overall with a time of 26:12.1. Evan Jones (Sr., Pella, Iowa) crossed the finish line next as he registered a 14th place finish with a time of 26:26.9.
Five other Gusties finished in the top-70 of 244 runners to round out the Gustavus top-seven:
34. Alex Wischnack (So., Norwood, Minn.), 27:12.5
35. Alex Fredrickson (Sr., Victoria, Minn.), 27:12.5
37. Carston Dammann (Sr., Lake City, Minn.), 27:19.7
47. Robert Nelson (So., Woodbury, Minn.), 27:32.3
69. Ryley Sandberg (Jr., Polk City, Iowa), 28:10.4
“I honestly think we could have placed higher with each of our guys. We had an off day, but we took second so we’re pretty excited about that,” Bahr said.
In two weeks the Gusties are back at it as they head to La Crosse, Wis. to compete in the Jim Drews Invitational, hosted by the University of Wiscosin-La Crosse.
