The Gustavus men's golf team was invited to the home of Colonel Terry Stevens following Day 1 of the Camp Lejeune Invite.
Camp Lejeune, N.C – The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s golf team posted a score of 298 on Friday, its first day of the Camp Lejeune Invitational being held at Paradise Point Golf Course. The meet, which features a military veteran in each group, pairs each competing team with one other school for each round. The Gusties were paired with Chowan University on the meet’s first day.
“What a great event,” said Coach Scott Moe. “Playing on a military base is quite an experience. It was fantastic to hear stories and have the opportunity to get to know some our country’s formerly enlisted men who fought for our country.”
Max Savini (Fy., Anoka, Minn.) led the Gusties on day one with a 73, and was followed by Andrew Brandt (Sr., Medina, Minn.) with a 74, Matt Spier (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) with a 75, Andrew Krasaway (Sr., Hermantown, Minn.) with a 76, and Chris Captain (So., Rochester, Minn.) with a 77.
“There were difficult scoring conditions today,” said Moe. “The ground was extremely wet after a three hour rain delay, but I’m proud of how the guys battled hard all day and am very pleased with the effort during our first tournament of the spring.”
The Gusties concluded their day by being invited to dinner at the home of Colonel Terry Stevens, along with the squad from Oglethorpe University.
“Colonel Stevens is an amazing man who was in the military for 35 years,” said Moe. “He had incredible stories and it was an honor to spend time with he and his wife at their home. We’re looking forward to day two, with better scores and additional time with some of our country’s military veterans.”
