St. Augustine, Florida – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team kicked off the spring portion of its 2014-15 campaign with a dual loss to Flagler College at the Ponte Vedra Country Club on Friday, April 3. The Gusties shot a nine-over-par 297 to fall to Flagler who fired a five-under 283.

“It was a good showing for both our squads,” said Head Coach Scottt Moe. “Matt Spier played great in our first event of the spring, and Alec Aunan stepped up and played very well too.  The team appears to be ready for the Emory Invitational, which is an excellent opportunity to compete against and see how we compare to a fantastic field. I saw some good things this week and I am looking forward to seeing those things translate to what will be a highly-competitive tournament.”

Matt Spier (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) led the Gusties with a three-under 69 to finish second overall. Spier was bested by only Flagler’s Spencer Schindler who went two strokes better with a five-under 67. Sebastian Barnoya filled out the podium in third with a two-under 70.

Next in line for Gustavus was Alec Aunan (Fr., Rock Island, Minn.) and Chris Captain (Fr., Rochester, Minn.) Aunan shot a 73 (+1) to place sixth, and Captain shot a 77 (+5) to finish 10th.

“We have had an amazing spring break trip so far and are fortunate have been staying at 1964 Gustavus graduate Bill Johnson’s house in Ponte Vedra Beach,” Moe continued about the team’s Florida excursion. “Practicing and playing at TPC Sawgrass and other fantastic courses in the area has been a great experience and the teams have worked hard all week.”

The Gustavus men’s golf team’s journey will conclude with a trip to Adairsville, Georgia and an opportunity to compete at the Emory Invitational being held April 6-7 at the Barnsley Gardens Resort.
