Gustavus’ Cameron Clause (Mankato, Minn./East) had a stellar indoor season, winning the MIAC decathlon with a new meet-record score, and it appears he’s ready to pick up right where he left off in the outdoor season. Last weekend, the senior starred at the Wartburg Select meet in Iowa in a talented 10-team field with a first-place finish in the decathlon that also resulted in a new Gustie school record in the event. For his performance, Clause was named the first MIAC Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete-of-the-Week of the 2014 season.
Clause showcased his all-around talent in the decathlon victory, as he won six of the 10 events en route to his first-place and school-record score of 6,491 points. Clause won the 100-meter dash (11.29), 400-meter dash (52.26), 1,500-meter dash (4:42.16), pole vault (14-6.75) and long jump (21-5.25). He finished second in the other four events – the 110-meter hurdles, high jump, discus and javelin – to complete his impressive performance. His score currently ranks first in the MIAC and third in the nation in 2014.
Clause and the Gusties will be back in front of the home fans this weekend when Gustavus hosts the Lee Krough Invitational in St. Peter, Minn., on Saturday. The following weekend, the team will travel to Northfield, Minn., where it will compete in the Carleton Relays. The team will be busy all month, with six events on the April calendar.
