Game Notes

Gusties Embark On 17th Season Of Women’s Hockey… The Gustavus women’s hockey team is currently in its 17th season. Founded in 1997, the Gusties have attained an all-time record of 354-88-25, which stands as the second winningest program in all of NCAA Division III women’s hockey. The Gustie women have won 12 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) titles in the 14 years of women’s hockey in the conference. Those 12 titles rank first in front of St. Thomas, Augsburg, and Saint Mary’s, who all have two championships apiece.

The Series… The two games this weekend will mark the 34th and 35th meetings between Gustavus and Concordia in women’s hockey.  The Gusties hold the upper hand in the all-time series with a near-perfect record of 30-1-2.  The lone loss for the Gusties came in the 2002-03 season when they fell to the Cobbers by the final score of 3-1 in St. Peter on Feb. 14.  Since then, Gustavus has rattled off a 25-game unbeaten streak against Concordia, stemming from a record of 23-0-2.  Last season, the Gusties swept the regular season series by the scores of 5-1 and 4-1 in St. Peter before defeating the Cobbers one more time in the MIAC Playoff Championship game by the score of 4-1.

Weekend Rewind… Last weekend, Gustavus squared off with a tough and talented UW-Superior team that gave the Gusties all they could handle in St. Peter.  The Yellowjackets handed the Gustie women their first loss at Don Roberts Ice Rink since 2010 by a final score of 2-1 before tying 2-2 on Saturday afternoon.  UW-Superior got out front early in the first period in both games.

On Friday night, the Yellowjackets scored twice within the first 10 minutes to take a 2-0 lead midway through the first period.  The Gusties came back to score early in the second, but could not capitalize on any offensive chances the rest of the way in the one-goal loss.

Similarly, UW-Superior jumped out to an early 1-0 lead five minutes into the game on Saturday afternoon.  However, this time Gustavus responded with two unanswered goals late in the opening frame to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.  After an evenly played 16 minutes in the second period, the Yellowjackets tied the game at 2-2, which is where it would stay for the remainder of the afternoon in the 2-2- tie.

Streaks Are Meant To Be Broken… Friday night’s loss to UW-Superior snapped a 49-game unbeaten streak dating back to March 20, 2010 when the Gusties lost to Elmira College in the third place game of the NCAA Tournament.  Gustavus had also won each of its last 27 games in St. Peter.  The last time the Gustie women had tied on their home ice was on Dec. 6, 2011 in a 1-1 tie with UW-River Falls.  While some teams may have responded with a lackluster performance, Gustavus instead started a new unbeaten streak at Don Roberts by earning a tie on Saturday afternoon.
