St. Cloud, Minn. – For the second time in as many weeks, the Gustavus men’s golf team holds a share of the lead after the first day of competition. The Gusties used a stroke total of 298 (+10) at Blackberry Ridge Golf Club on Saturday to sit atop the standings in the Saint John’s Invitational.  The University of Manitoba also shot a 298 to match the Gusties.  Tomorrow’s final round will be played at Greystone Golf Club in Sauk Centre, Minn.

Senior Alex Kolquist (Hermantown, Minn.) and junior Andrew Oakes (Hermantown, Minn.) have emerged as a dynamic duo for Gustavus in the early weeks of the season.  The Hermantown twosome shot a pair of even-par 72’s on Saturday to lead the Gusties and place them in a five-way tie for third in the individual standings.  Junior Jon Husu (Lino Lakes, Minn.) was also a key contributor for the Gustie men on day one, shooting a two-over-par 74 to place him in a three-way tie for 10th.

“We put ourselves in a nice position today,” said assistant coach Jordan Hawkinson.  “They did a really good job of continuing to plug away and capitalizing on a string of good holes.  It was a good team effort.”

Tomorrow’s final round will be played at Greystone Golf Club in Sauk Centre, Minn., beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
